How Long Does a Divorce Take in NY?
In an uncontested divorce, my office usually prepares the necessary divorce documents in about 2 business days. Next, the divorce documents are submitted to the appropriate court. The final divorce can take a few weeks to be ordered by a judge. Sometimes it can take a little longer (4-8 weeks) if the court has a busy calendar. The fastest divorce we did in 2019 was in only 11 days!
When the divorce is contested, the timeline is unpredictable and contingent upon the parties coming to an agreement on their unresolved matters.
If the parties cannot come to an agreement then they may need help from the court. Make sure to have an experienced trial lawyer if you think you will have to involve the court to decide your divorce terms.
